Golf cart seat belts — retractable and fixed lap belts from GTW and MadJax, priced from about $24 for a single belt to $509 for a complete multi-seat kit. Belts are sold individually and in sets for 2, 4 and 6 passenger carts, and most kits include the mounting brackets and hardware needed to fit them.

Do you need seat belts on a golf cart?

It depends where the cart is driven. Carts used only on a golf course generally are not required to have belts. However, once a cart is driven on public roads it is usually treated as a Low Speed Vehicle (LSV), and LSVs are federally required to have seat belts along with lights, mirrors, a windshield and a VIN. Many communities also require belts for carts used on neighbourhood streets. Check your state and local rules — they vary considerably.

Retractable or fixed?

Retractable belts pull out as needed and roll away when not in use, which keeps them off the floor and out of the way — the usual choice for carts that carry passengers regularly. Fixed lap belts adjust manually and cost less; they are common on fleet and utility carts.

Mounting

Seat belts must anchor to the frame or a reinforced bracket, never to a plastic body panel. Most kits include the correct brackets for a specific cart and seat configuration, so order by the number of seats you are fitting and check the kit lists your cart. If you are adding belts to a rear-facing seat kit, confirm the belt kit is designed for that seat rather than the front bench.
